Never been to a dive bar, but if they're anything like this place then I'm sold. The Upside Down Plaza has it all -- pool tables, a pinball machine, a vending machine, and cheap drinks of course. The bartender was very friendly and helped me pick out some good beverages as a new drinker. Met a few interesting folks while I was there with some friends and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Watch your step going down and ESPECIALLY as you go back up.
Best place to go play barefoot water polo in the south east. The corn dog on the menu is crazy good. 10/10 check out the back porch in the area where the secret entrance to the five points underground is. There was a dark brotherhood application for anyone looking to join that Organization on one of the back pool tables.
Hands down, this is the best dive bar in town. I’ve been a patron for almost 13 years. My favorite bartender has to be Skilla. She takes good care of everyone there. Low prices, great music selection on the jukebox, karaoke every week, pool tables, & chill bartenders.
Sometimes you wanna go where everyone knows your name (and people aren't afraid to drink enough to forget it). The plaza is the perfect dive if you're not tryna be cute and you're not trying to drink cute. The bartenders are friendly and the drinks are cheap. There are plenty trendy places with cool lights and decor and Instagrammable views--that ain't this. The plaza is about drinking, pool and whoever you bring with you. Everything else (good bathrooms, fancy drinks, trendy anything) is a distant (non existent) second.
I've always loved this bar. After moving to Alabama from Michigan this place makes me feel welcomed and I can always count on my trip there being a good one. The drinks are cheap (but good), I love getting to pick the music, and the pool tables are great too. The bartenders are super nice! Shout out to Max who always recommends some delicious drinks and always has a smile on his face. Definitely recommend this bar!!
We popped in this week after a soft covid opening. Our group basically had the whole place ourselves for a while. Allen was our bartender. He wore his mask the entire time, extremely approachable, friendly, professional, outgoing and managed the bar like a boss. It’s a very cool spot under ground. Lights and tables are as good as you can expect. The wall art alone (besides Allen) makes this place 5 stars. It’s my understanding they do heavy medal but let us mix it up with some Trap Rap and Charlie Daniels. We also met some young hot chicks there that our single friend couldn’t quit drooling over. I’m not from Birmingham and was only passing though but I get the feeling they throw some really cool events and a lot of the locals hang out here. If we’re ever in the area again-we will definitely be going back-as long as Allen is bar tending, the decor stays original and it remains a non judgmental zone. excellent place @upsidedownplaza
A dive bar in Birmingham, but one with such enduring charm that you can’t knock it. Don’t go in expecting it to be a world class experience and you’ll have a great time. They have music, pool tables and cheap drinks. Bar staff is awesome. The place is kind of underground, having to go downstairs to get to. If this place looks oddly familiar, you may have been there before but had one too many drinks to remember.
